Presidential Legacy Awards

These awards are the most purposeful and the driving force of the ExCEL Awards Program. Each Presidential Legacy Award honors and acknowledges the legacy of each of the Presidential Leaders of the College of Charleston.

Leo Higdon Legacy for Outstanding Leadership

This award recognizes a nominee who exemplifies the highest standards of professional, social, and cultural leadership – one who has given freely of time and energy to the promotion of excellence in education.

The Leo Higdon Legacy Award for Outstanding Leadership is based on the following criteria:

  • Exemplifies leadership through extensive campus and/or community involvement.
  • Exhibits integrity and incorporates a style of servant leadership - shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible.
  • Exemplary servant leader who has created long-lasting impact within the campus and local communities
  • Committed to increasing awareness and respect for different persons. Takes steps to enhance diversity and inclusion on campus by creating and sustaining a welcoming and accessible campus environment for faculty, staff, students, and community members.

Alexander Sanders Legacy for Outstanding Public Service 

This award recognizes a nominee who has positively affected the quality of the campus environment or the quality of service delivery to students, colleagues, and/or local community members in the areas of leadership, valuing people, and understanding of the needs of those who are affected by public policies.

The Alexander Sanders Legacy for Outstanding Public Service is based on the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate excellence in the achievement of results for long lasting impact on the campus community
  • Outstanding dedication to their work at the College while maintaining a high level of commitment to public service values and ethics
  • Contributes to creating an open and collaborative environment that engages citizens and partners for the public good
  • Committed to increasing awareness and respect for different persons. Takes steps to enhance diversity and inclusion on campus by creating and sustaining a welcoming and accessible campus environment for faculty, staff, students, and community members.

Theodore Stern Legacy for Visionary Award

This award goes to the nominee leading the charge of his/her department, division, or community.

The Theodore Stern Visionary Legacy Award is based on the following criteria:

  • Exemplifies the qualities of a pioneer, a pacesetter, and thrives on innovation and change
  • Significantly influences the campus environment through implementation of creative strategies to improve the academic experience of students while leading faculty and staff towards achieving a common goal
  • Courage in making strategic leadership decisions; cultivates a partnership approach with faculty and staff that encourages respect, team spirit, and team learning
  • Committed to increasing awareness and respect for different persons. Takes steps to enhance diversity and inclusion on campus by creating and sustaining a welcoming and accessible campus environment for faculty, staff, students, and community members.

Harry Lightsey Legacy for Humanitarian Award

This award recognizes an individual who continues the legacy of unselfish concern and noble desire to improve the lives of faculty, staff, students at the College of Charleston and the local community.

The Harry Lightsey Legacy for Humanitarian Award is based on the following criteria:

  • Reaches out to others in times of need, exhibiting behavior that goes above and beyond basic community responsibility.
  • Exemplifies the spirit of benevolence, generosity of spirit and leadership
  • Demonstrates commitment to giving back to others and to the community through philanthropy
  • Committed to increasing awareness and respect for different persons. Takes steps to enhance diversity and inclusion on campus by creating and sustaining a welcoming and accessible campus environment for faculty, staff, students, and community members.
