With your gift, we will continue to ensure that students like our 2010 Humanities and Social Sciences Scholars in English can truly Live the Life and experience the richest academic and intellectual experience possible. Here's an example of students who would benefit from your gift:
- 2010 HSS Award-winners for the Department of English: Bryanna Parker and Erin Wooten. Parker and Wooten were also members of the Honors College at the College of Charleston.
- Parker graduated with a degree in English and minors in Psychology and Women's and Gender Studies. She completed a bachelor's essay on the use of fat suits in contemporary films, entitled, "Fat Suits and the Freak of the Modern World." Parker received an invitation to present her paper on the 'construction of fatness in American and greater western culture' at the South Eastern Women's Studies Association Conference.
- Wooten also graduated in May 2010 with a degree in English. She minored in Jewish Studies. As an undergrad, Wooten received two grants that had her study abroad in England, and work as a research and teaching assistant at the College of Charleston. Wooten is now a graduate student at The Citadel, pursuing a degree in secondary education English.
- The 2010 Anna B. Katona award in American Literature scholarship award-winner is English major Rachel Reinke (double-minor, Women's and Gender Studies and African American Studies). In addition to winning this award, Reinke was the recipient of the Alexander Chambliss Connelley Award and she was awarded a research grant to study the works of Eudora Welty with Julia Eichelberger, Associate Chair of the Department of English. Reinke was also a graduate of the Honors College. Reinke currently participates in the City Year-Los Angeles program, where she works with a fourth grade classroom in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles.
